Family Island Regatta in George Town Exumas, Bahamas 2009
After leaving the boat on the mooring for a couple of months, we returned for a few weeks in March break. Found the boat safe and sound as we left her. I recommend this mooring 100% for anyone leaving their boat for any extended period of time.
We made it back just in time for the annual Family Island Regatta in George Town. In addition to the traditional around the island race, there all kinds of activities for the adults and kids alike. Beach Volley ball, scavenger hunt, kids coconut hunt races in the lagoon and much much more.
During this time of the year, you will find upwards of 300 boats in harbour, and the population of George Town increases by over a thousand people. Much of this population are families with kids. This is a big deal for the local economy. You’ll find local surveyors go out weekly in their dinghy counting the number of boats in the harbour and report to the local business. Based on this survey they can predict the type of business they might have and how to stock the local stores.
