Day 13 – Peterson’s Boat Yard in Upper Nyack

Peterson’s Boat Yard – Black Diamond’s home for the next 2 months.

I received a reasonable quote from Peterson’s Boat Yard, to repair the damage to the bow, from the incident in the locks. I decided to haul Black Diamond out of the water and store her on land, in order to avoid marine growth and salt-water damage. The yard is secure and gated, so I decided this would be a very safe place to keep the boat. Once out of the water, I power-washed the hull, inspected the keel, (no problems, considering we touched bottom a few times on this leg of the trip). Peterson’s is also going to change my oil, and re-apply some bottom paint to the hull. Black Diamond will be ready to go when I return with the crew in end October, for our ocean passage to Florida.

I spent two days getting the boat ready for storage on land, I pulled down the full enclosure canvas, emptied the water tanks and the fridge, cleaned the bilge, tuned the rigging and other little duties.

One of the evenings in Nyack, I went for a walk through town (one of the nicest little towns we stopped in, so far). It’s only about a 20 minute drive from Manhattan, and just one bridge away from the George Washington Bridge. On the main street there are many beautiful colonial homes that belong to professionals who commute to Manhattan for work, but live in the little town of Nyack.

Walking through town I found dozens of nice restaurants, little cafés, antique and gift shops. I decided to stop at this little Mexican place for dinner. Their special on Tuesday’s was $2 tacos and $2 Mexican beers. After looking through the menu, I decided to order, a shrimp tostada, with Salvadorian slaw, smoked jalapeno cream, salsa and guacamole (prepared fresh at your table with spice to taste). I noticed some other interesting choices on the menu: Cuban fries, dusted with cumin, Yucca steak fries, served with spicy mayo, BBQ sauce and banana ketchup. I have never seen anything like this in Cuba, I’ll have to ask Jarold our very talented designer from Cuba about this. Then I topped it all off with Mexican fried ice cream! Now you can see where I get my figure from (remember, I was eating alone!).

After tending to all the boats needs, I caught a flight out to Calgary to meet with our Client West Jet, and finally back to Toronto the next day.

I am home for now, until October, when I return with the crew for our off shore passage…..
